Ski lessons in Chamonix: ESF, private lessons, instructor-guides, prices and levels
The Chamonix ESF publishes a detailed 2026-2027 price list: group lessons to start or progress, private lessons by the hour or the day, an instructor-guide for the glacier zone. The prices, what you need to add, how to choose between group and private lessons, and where the mountain guide's job begins.

The École du ski français in Chamonix is the school whose 2026-2027 offer is best documented: group lessons for adults, teenagers and children, private lessons from 55 minutes to a full day, and an instructor-guide for the glacier zone. Other schools exist in the valley, but none published a comparable price list for the same season.
Here are the prices from the list published on 8 October 2026, what they do not include, how to choose between group and private lessons, and where ski teaching ends and the high-mountain guide's job begins.
How much do ESF group lessons cost?
| 2026-2027 option | Times | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| Adult ski discovery, 3 lessons | Thursday to Saturday, 9am to noon | €86 |
| Adult beginner, 5 or 6 lessons | Sunday to Friday, 9am to 1pm (Sunday 12:30pm to 4:30pm) | €304 |
| Intermediate and advanced | weekly, same times | €304 |
| Teenagers, high-altitude lessons, from beginner to Classe 3 | 9am to 1pm (Sunday 12:30pm to 4:30pm) | €350 |
Group lessons only run with at least four people signed up. Below that, they can be cancelled or reorganised: ask about the refund rule when you buy, especially early or late in the season.
The three-lesson option at €86 is the cheapest way to find out whether you like skiing before committing to the week. The full week remains the best balance of price and progress for a beginner.
How much does a private lesson cost?
| Duration | Times | 1 to 2 or 3 people | Larger group |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55 minutes | noon to 1pm | €80 (1 or 2) | €100 (3 or 4) |
| 2 hours | 9:30am to 11:30am or 2:30pm to 4:30pm | €160 (1 or 2) | €210 (3 or 4) |
| 3 hours | 9am to noon or 1:30pm to 4:30pm | €250 (1 to 3) | €300 (4 to 6) |
| 4 hours | 9am to 1pm or 12:30pm to 4:30pm | €310 (1 to 3) | €360 (4 to 6) |
| Full day | 9am to 4pm | €490 (1 to 3) | €570 (4 to 6) |
The price is for the instructor, not per person: for three people, the day comes to about €163 each. That is three times the price of a morning of group lessons (fifty to sixty euros over a €304 week), for an instructor who looks after you alone. The noon lesson, at €80, is the cheapest and least requested slot, while the groups are having lunch.
A private lesson becomes the right choice when levels differ within a family, when the stay is short, or to correct a specific fault. To learn the basics with a group of similar level, group lessons remain more sensible.
Want to compare schools and guides? Ski lessons, guided off-piste outings, the Vallée Blanche descent with a guide: our partner's Chamonix page brings together snow activities, with reviews and cancellation terms.

- The lift pass, compulsory as soon as the group uses the lifts and never included in group lessons.
- Equipment: skis, boots, helmet.
- Insurance: the ESF shows E-Gloo insurance at €3.50 a day and €21 for six days, and the Carte Neige at €106 for an adult, €97 for a young person.
- Transport to the ski area where the lesson takes place.
A €304 week of lessons is therefore not the cost of a week of skiing. For a beginner, the Soleil pass, valid at the Savoy among others, costs €27.50 for an adult day, much less than the big lift pass. The options are compared in our lift pass guide, rental in renting ski gear in Chamonix, and insurance in practical services.
How do you choose the right option for your goal?
| Goal | Suitable option | Criterion |
|---|---|---|
| First experience | beginner group lessons | similar-level group, low cost, several days |
| Progress on piste | intermediate group or private lessons | level assessed, work on turning and braking |
| Become independent quickly | private lessons of 2 to 4 hours | individual correction, choice of ski area |
| Family or friends | private lessons for 3 to 6 people | fairly similar levels |
| Off-piste | guide or instructor-guide | experience, avalanche safety, route |
| Ski touring | specialist guide | ascent, kick turns, risk management |
The ESF levels (stars, classes) give a structured progression, but no page publishes a correspondence with the maximum gradient or the ability to ski off-piste. A Classe 3 is not automatically enough for the glacier, freeride or touring.
Where do the lessons take place?
The place depends on the option and the level: beginners start on small areas such as the Savoy or the Planards, intermediates go up to the big sectors. The pages consulted give the times, not a full map of meeting points: the place is given after booking.
This matters in Chamonix, where the ski areas are separated by the road. A lesson at Le Brévent and accommodation in Argentière means a trip every morning before 9am. The sectors and how to reach them are described in our piste map guide.
Are lessons taught in English or other languages?
The ESF sells its lessons in French and English, a sign of an international clientele. Nothing guarantees that a group lesson will be bilingual, or that an instructor who speaks German, Italian or Dutch will be available. Ask about the language when you buy, especially for a beginner child.
What about children and the snow garden?
The snow garden is booked directly with the ESF: ask about the minimum age, times and group sizes, which cannot be deduced from the adult lessons. For a child of 3 or 4, two hours in the morning are plenty.
For a young child, ask about the minimum age on the first day of the lesson, whether they need to be toilet-trained, the real time spent on skis, the exact place, the maximum group size, the equipment provided, the lift pass needed and cancellation terms in case of closure. Other activities for children are in Chamonix with kids.
Instructor-guide, high-mountain guide: what is the difference?
The ESF offers an instructor-guide at €400 for four hours and €570 for a day, linked to the glacier zone on its French page. Group capacities differ between the French and English pages: get them confirmed.
This option is not a freeride or touring course: ask about the programme, minimum level and safety gear before booking. For guided off-piste, Evolution 2 charged €160 per person in low season for a group outing, safety gear included. For the Vallée Blanche, the Compagnie des guides sells a group outing at €175 per person, lifts not included: see our Vallée Blanche guide.
Do not mix up the prices: the ESF instructor-guide's rates are not those of the Compagnie des guides, which did not publish a full 2026-2027 off-piste price list.
When should you book your lessons?
During the school holidays, book lessons and instructors at the same time as your accommodation: no occupancy rate is published, but morning slots and children's lessons are the most in demand. Outside the holidays, a few days ahead is often enough, as long as the four-person minimum is reached for group lessons.
The ski areas' season runs from 12 December 2026 to 18 April 2027: the dates for each sector are in lift opening dates, and choosing the ski area in our guide to skiing in Chamonix.
Possible disappointments
- A group lesson cancelled for lack of four sign-ups: ask about refunds when you buy.
- Forgetting the lift pass in the budget, when it is compulsory.
- Mistaking the instructor-guide for a freeride course: ask for the programme.
- No guaranteed language for a child who does not speak French.
- The journey between accommodation and the lesson, in a valley with scattered ski areas.
The winter press kit also announces a free screening on the history of skiing and the first cable cars on 14 January 2027 at the Espace Animation in Les Houches, by reservation. All our skiing pages are in the Skiing section, and the budget for a week in how much a trip to Chamonix costs.
Les Houches, the ski area for families who are learning: wooded runs, schools at the foot of the village and gentler accommodation prices than in central Chamonix, with the valley train for rest days.

Clémence Bossonnet
Clémence grew up in Les Houches and worked four winters at the ticket office of a lift in the valley. She knows which passes sell for too much on a Saturday, and which runs close first when the snow gives way in April. She only gives a lift time if it is on that day's board.
