Chamonix ski holidays: package deal or do it yourself?

A Chamonix ski package buys simplicity and protection, not always the lowest price. What packages include, dated 2026-2027 prices, the line-by-line cost of a do-it-yourself week, catered chalets and who should choose which.

Chamonix ski holidays: package deal or do it yourself?

A Chamonix ski holiday can be bought in one click, flight, transfer and hotel together, or assembled piece by piece around a flight to Geneva. Neither is always cheaper. What a package sells is simplicity and, if a flight is included, financial protection; what doing it yourself sells is choice.

This page compares the two with dated prices for the 2026-2027 season: what a package includes and leaves out, the cost of a week built yourself, catered chalets, the dearest and cheapest weeks, and what happens if something goes wrong.

What does a Chamonix ski package usually include?

A UK ski package is typically a return flight to Geneva, a shared transfer, seven nights in a hotel, apartment or chalet, sometimes a rep in resort. The rest depends on the contract, and the word "package" proves nothing on its own.

  • Usually included: flights, transfer, accommodation, the board basis stated (room only, breakfast, half board or catered).
  • Sometimes included: lift pass, ski hire, a ski carriage allowance on the flight.
  • Usually extra: lessons, helmet, ski insurance, tourist tax, single-room supplement, meals outside the board basis, private transfers.

Look for the lift pass by name. A Chamonix offer should say Chamonix Le Pass, which covers the valley's main ski areas, or Mont-Blanc Unlimited, wider and dearer, which adds Les Houches, Courmayeur in Italy and more. If neither name appears, budget for the pass yourself: see our Chamonix lift pass guide.

What do packages cost for 2026-2027?

Comparable UK rate cards for the season are not public, so here are offers actually on sale in October 2026, with their dates and inclusions. They are snapshots, not averages.

OfferDatesIncludesPrice
Igluski, Alpina Eclectic hotel3 nights, 9 to 12 March 2027Gatwick flights, transfer, hotel; no lift pass mentioned£593 per person, two sharing
Igluski, Le Refuge des Aiglons3 nights, 14 to 17 March 2027Gatwick flights, transfer, hotel; no lift pass mentioned£565 per person, two sharing
Tourist office offer, full board7 nights over New Year 2027full board and lift pass, no flight or transferfrom €805 per person
Tourist office offer, Les Praz7 nights in April 2027half board, no lift pass mentionedfrom €424 per person

Two traps hide in the small print. On both Igluski pages the board basis says "room only" in one place and "bed and breakfast" in another, and the tourist tax, about £3 to £20 per person per week, is paid on top.

A strikethrough "was" price is not a measure of value either: compare the total with the same hotel booked directly for the same dates.

How much does a do-it-yourself week cost?

Here is a week built line by line, per adult, at the prices published for 2026-2027. Flights are left out because they vary too much with the departure airport and the date to give one honest figure.

ItemPrice per adultNotes
Return transfer from Geneva€15 to €50 each way, sharedor €180 to €350 per vehicle, private
Chamonix Le Pass, 6 days in high season€373from 19 December to 9 April
Mont-Blanc Unlimited, per day€75 to €104only worth it if you will ski beyond the valley
Ski hire, 6 to 7 days€82 to €156beginner to expert pack, skis, poles and boots
Group lessons, adults€304ESF, five or six morning lessons, starting price
Accommodation and foodvery variablesee the envelope below

Our working envelope for a ski week for two, seven nights in a quiet week, is €1,700 to €4,200 before flights. It is detailed post by post in how much a trip to Chamonix costs.

Hire and lessons are cheaper booked online ahead, as explained in ski rental in Chamonix and ski lessons in Chamonix.

Building the week yourself starts with the bed. Central Chamonix keeps lifts, ski hire and restaurants on foot; Les Houches has its own family ski area and lower prices, with buses to the other areas.

Is a catered chalet worth it in Chamonix?

A catered chalet is the British way to ski: breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner most evenings, often wine with dinner, daily cleaning and a host. It does not, by itself, include flights, transfers, the lift pass or ski hire.

Chamonix chalets are mostly priced per property, which makes comparisons slippery. A large self-catered chalet for twelve was advertised at €4,600 to €8,400 a week outside the festive weeks; at the luxury end, the eight-bed Black Diamond ranged from €8,700 to €25,850 a week depending on the date.

Divide by the number of people who will really sleep there, not by the bed count. A €9,500 chalet is reasonable for fourteen and very expensive for four, and the catering, when offered, is often quoted on application. More options are in chalet rental in Chamonix.

Which weeks are cheapest and most expensive?

The season is announced from 12 December 2026 to 18 April 2027 for the main areas. Within it, prices follow school holidays more than snow.

  • Most expensive: Christmas and New Year, the February half-term weeks, and Easter, with Easter Sunday on 28 March 2027. The Black Diamond chalet above triples between late November and the week after Christmas.
  • Cheapest: early December, January outside New Year, March after the February holidays, and April.

Cheap does not mean good snow. Early December can mean only part of the valley open, and Chamonix's low sectors suffer in a warm spell; the high areas, Les Grands Montets first, hold up best. Late season has its own appeal, explained in skiing in Chamonix in April.

The end of the season, the best balance of snow and price: in the last week of the season, from 10 to 17 April 2027, lift passes go back to early-season prices and Les Grands Montets stay open longer than the other areas.

Where do packages actually put you?

"Chamonix" in a brochure can mean the town centre, Chamonix Sud, Les Praz, Les Bossons, Les Houches or Argentière. The valley is long, the ski areas do not link on skis, and "central" never means ski-in, ski-out.

Ask for the exact address and the winter journey time to the lift you will use, the ski school meeting point and the hire shop. A cheaper hotel in a quiet hamlet can cost you a bus ride twice a day with boots on.

What protection do you get with a package?

For UK buyers, a package that includes a flight should come with an ATOL certificate. If the travel company fails, the scheme can keep you in your accommodation, refund some replacement costs and bring you home, and the certificate names who protects your trip.

  • A flight bought directly from an airline with an e-ticket is not ATOL-protected.
  • ATOL is not travel insurance: no medical costs, no claims for illness, injury, cancellations or complaints.
  • Not every company has to hold an ATOL, so check before paying.

Hotels, transfers and lift passes booked separately are separate contracts, each with its own seller. That is the real price difference between the two approaches: when one link fails, you deal with it yourself, with your card issuer or your insurer.

So, package or do it yourself: which suits you?

A package tends to win for a family travelling in February half-term, a group that wants one booking with transfer and catering, people flying from a regional UK airport with ski flights, late bookers when central flats are gone, and anyone who values help when a flight is cancelled.

Doing it yourself tends to win for adults sharing an apartment, flexible dates, skiers with their own kit or no need for lessons, short stays of three to five nights, and anyone happy to stay in Les Houches or Argentière.

Either way, ask four questions before paying: the exact address, the lift pass included by name, everything included line by line, and who protects your money. For the skiing itself, read our guide to skiing in Chamonix, a ready-made plan in a ski week in Chamonix, and for families family skiing in Chamonix. Getting there is covered in Geneva airport transfers, and all our pages in the Skiing section.

Does a Chamonix ski package include the lift pass?
Only if the contract names it, Chamonix Le Pass or Mont-Blanc Unlimited. The March 2027 Igluski offers we found included flights, transfer and hotel, with no lift pass mentioned.
How much is a lift pass for a week in Chamonix?
Six days of Chamonix Le Pass cost €373 for an adult in high season 2026-2027. The Mont-Blanc Unlimited costs €75 to €104 a day.
What is a catered chalet?
A chalet where staff provide breakfast, afternoon tea and most dinners, plus cleaning. Flights, transfers, lift passes and ski hire are usually extra.
When is the cheapest time for a Chamonix ski holiday?
Early December, January outside New Year, March after the February holidays and April. Christmas, February half-term and Easter are the most expensive weeks.
Is my Chamonix ski holiday ATOL protected?
A package with a flight sold by an ATOL holder is, and you should receive an ATOL certificate. A flight bought directly from an airline, or a hotel booked on its own, is not covered by ATOL.
