When is the best time to visit Chamonix? Snow, hiking, crowds and prices, month by month
The best month depends on what you are coming to do, and the cheapest is often the one when everything is closed. Chamonix month by month: snow, hiking, crowds, prices, the 2026-2027 season dates, and the three off-seasons when the valley looks open without being so.

There is no single good month for Chamonix, there is one per plan. Skiers aim for January or March, hikers for September, and visitors who want the winter atmosphere for Christmas or February, at top prices. And travellers looking for the cheapest option often land in the off-season, when the valley is open but its lifts are not.
This page reads Chamonix month by month, with the dates published for the 2026-2027 season. For the day's weather at the summit, see our Aiguille du Midi webcams and weather.
For a first stay, aim for the windows when everything runs without the crowds: late June and September in summer, March and mid-April in winter. The lifts are open, queues are shorter and prices less stretched than in August or during the February holidays.
When is the best time to go to Chamonix?
- To ski: from mid-December to early April, with the best chance of open ski areas between January and March.
- To hike: from June to September at low and mid altitude. Passes can stay snowy until July.
- The best balance of weather and crowds: late January outside the school holidays, early December if the snow is there, the second half of March outside the holidays, and September for walking.
- The most expensive and crowded: Christmas and New Year, the French February holidays, some weekends from January to March and UTMB week, usually at the end of August.
- The riskiest: May, October and November, when many lifts and mountain restaurants close for maintenance.
These are practical recommendations, not a weather guarantee. The rule that never fails: check the snow, the webcams, the wind and which sectors are open a few days before you leave.
What is Chamonix like month by month?
| Month | In the valley | At altitude | What is running |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | cold, short days, possible temperature inversions | generally good for skiing | skiing widely open, fewer people outside the holidays |
| February | cold to mild depending on the spell | a good month to ski, varies with altitude | very high demand during the French holidays |
| March | longer days | a good compromise, soft snow lower down in the afternoon | busy some weeks |
| April | mild, refreezing at night | skiing in the morning and at altitude | sectors closing one by one, reduced prices |
| May | clearly spring | very limited skiing, leftover snow | off-season, lifts under maintenance |
| June | pleasant, unsettled in the mountains | high trails still snowy in places | lifts and hiking start again |
| July | hot in the valley | hiking possible, glaciers variable | high season, strong demand |
| August | hot, afternoon thunderstorms | hiking and mountaineering with early starts | very busy, UTMB at the end of August |
| September | quieter, cool nights | a good month for walking if the snow holds off | some lifts open, then closures |
| October | cool, bright or unsettled | snow possible up high | off-season, many closures |
| November | getting colder | very uncertain snow cover | tourist low point, ski areas being prepared |
| December | variable cold | skiing depending on altitude and artificial snow | ski areas reopen, then the Christmas peak |
Chamonix sits at around 1,000 metres: the weather in the valley does not describe the weather in the ski areas, let alone at the Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 metres. A sunny day in town can hide wind or fog up high. Snow in the streets says nothing about whether the slopes are open.
When should you ski in Chamonix in 2026-2027?
Chamonix Le Pass covers a commercial period from 28 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, in three price periods. The general opening of the ski areas is announced from 12 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, with Les Grands Montets opening from 28 November 2026 and closing on 2 May 2027.
| Period | Chamonix Le Pass adult day | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 28 November to 18 December 2026 | €61.20 | start of the season, ski areas partly open |
| 19 December 2026 to 9 April 2027 | €76.50 | the heart of the season, with the Christmas and February peaks |
| 10 April to 2 May 2027 | €61.20 | spring skiing, a shrinking offer |
Bought online in advance, a day starts at €49. The details are in our lift pass guide, and choosing a ski area in our guide to skiing in Chamonix. Openings lift by lift are in lift opening dates.
Early December, the opening gamble: the first ski areas are running, the valley gets ready for Christmas and accommodation keeps its pre-Christmas prices. Book with flexible cancellation, as the snow decides everything.

From June to September, with some nuances. June can be excellent lower down, but higher routes are still subject to snow: Lac Blanc, the Chéserys and the balcony trails keep patches of old snow early in the season. July and August offer the fullest lift operations, and also the highest prices and the biggest crowds.
September is often the best compromise: fewer people, bearable temperatures, conditions still good, with no guarantee for lifts that close during the month (La Flégère from 14 September 2026, Balme on the 21st). In summer, set off early: afternoons bring heat, clouds and storms. The routes are in our guide to hiking in Chamonix.
Why should you be wary of May, October and November?
This is the most often underestimated period. The valley is accessible and the hotels in the centre are open, but several facilities close at the same time, each on its own date. For autumn 2026:
- La Flégère closed from 14 September to 27 November;
- Balme-Charamillon closed from 21 September to 11 December 2026;
- Le Brévent limited to Planpraz from 17 October to 1 November, then closed from 2 November to 11 December 2026;
- the Aiguille du Midi closed from 2 November to 18 December 2026;
- Montenvers closed from 2 November to 4 December.
The cheapest is therefore often what is closed: cheaper accommodation in November does not make up for the lack of lifts and mountain restaurants. If you come in the off-season, come to walk in the valley, not to go up.
When are there the fewest people?
The generally quieter periods:
- early December before Christmas, with the risk of partly open ski areas;
- the second half of January outside the holidays;
- late March outside the holidays;
- the second half of September, if the weather holds.
Conversely, demand soars around Christmas and New Year, during the French February holidays and the British February half-term (notably the weeks of 13 and 20 February 2027), on sunny winter weekends and during UTMB week at the end of August, when runners and spectators fill the hotels and transport. No occupancy rate or weekly hotel price series is published: we do not put figures on the increases.
Do prices change much depending on the period?
For the lift pass, yes: from €61.20 to €76.50 for an adult day depending on the period. For accommodation, the gaps are even wider: a 3-star hotel goes from about €90 to €140 a night in low season to €180 to €320 at Christmas and in the February holidays, as a rough guide.
The sightseeing lifts keep the same price all year: the Aiguille du Midi costs €83 return for an adult at the 2026 public rate, Le Brévent €43 to the summit. It is the weather on the day that gives them their value, not the month. Hotel prices are detailed in our hotel guide and where to stay in Chamonix.
What is there to do in Chamonix in each season?
| Season | What is worth the trip |
|---|---|
| Winter | skiing across five ski areas, the Vallée Blanche with a guide, the Aiguille du Midi on a cold, dry day |
| Spring | morning skiing on the high areas, the Aiguille du Midi until 5pm, the Mer de Glace |
| Summer | Lac Blanc, the north and south balcony trails, Montenvers, paragliding |
| Autumn | valley walks and golden larches, with few lifts running |
All the ideas are in things to do in Chamonix. For altitude, see the Aiguille du Midi and the Mer de Glace, and for the glacier descent the Vallée Blanche.
April, the season that stays open
April deserves a place of its own. Lift passes get cheaper from 10 April, the February crowds have gone, the days are longer, and the high ski areas stay open until 18 April, Les Grands Montets until 2 May. It is a season for independent skiers who like to ski early and enjoy the valley in the afternoon.
We recommend the week of 10 to 17 April 2027, after the Easter holidays and before the general closure. It is all detailed in skiing in Chamonix in April.
The week of 10 to 17 April 2027: spring prices on lift passes, the high ski areas still open and accommodation less in demand than in midwinter. The search dates below are already set for that week.

- Snow in town does not guarantee the slopes are open.
- Sun in the valley can hide wind or fog at the Aiguille du Midi.
- A general lift pass does not guarantee that every ski area is open.
- The off-seasons give the impression of an open resort with half its facilities closed.
- "From" prices are not the prices of a Saturday in February.
