La Flégère in Chamonix: gondola, skiing, Lac Blanc and restaurants

La Flégère is the ski and hiking area that starts from Les Praz, about three kilometres from the centre of Chamonix. Its gondola climbs the Aiguilles Rouges side, facing the massif: from the top you see Mont Blanc, the Drus and the Mer de Glace head-on, from a different angle to Le Brévent.

In winter it is an intermediate ski area linked to Le Brévent. In summer it is the gateway to Lac Blanc, the valley's most famous hike, and its busiest. Here is what La Flégère is worth in each case, and how to make the most of it.

Our tip: For Lac Blanc, take one of the first gondolas: you walk in the cool, you find room on the lakeshore and you come down before the afternoon storms, frequent in summer.

Is the ride up La Flégère worth it if you do not ski?

It is worth the trip on a clear day, for the head-on view of Mont Blanc. Allow two to three hours for a simple panoramic outing, queues included outside the very busiest days. In fog or low cloud, the ride loses almost all its appeal: check the webcam before you pay.

The gondola is also the starting point for several hikes, from Lac de la Flégère to the Grand Balcon Nord. Above it, the Index chairlift continues to a higher sector, useful mainly for skiers and experienced hikers.

How much is the gondola, and what are its opening times?

2026 pedestrian ticketAdultChild aged 5 to 14
Single Les Praz-Flégère€19€16.20
Return Les Praz-Flégère€25€21.30
Family ticket€77.60

Children under 5 ride free, and a group rate exists from 20 people. To go up to the Index, buy the combined ticket straight away: it is the one the ticket office sells.

For the 2026-2027 season, the gondola is closed from 14 September to 27 November 2026, then open:

  • from 28 November 2026 to 5 February 2027, every day from 8:50am to 4:45pm;
  • from 6 February to 11 April 2027, every day from 8:50am to 5:15pm.

These times depend on favourable weather: check it is open that same morning. The calendar for the other lifts is in lift opening dates.

What is the skiing like at La Flégère?

Mostly intermediate. The runs suit skiers who already control their turns and can handle variable snow; a complete beginner will be less at ease than on a nursery area, as some link runs become demanding when the snow is hard, mogulled or wind-blown.

The appeal lies in the combination of high runs and the view of Mont Blanc, more than in the size of the area. The Brévent-Flégère season runs from 12 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, even though the gondola reopens at the end of November.

This pass, Chamonix Le Pass, also covers Le Brévent, Les Grands Montets and Balme, depending on operating conditions. Children under 5 ski free. Lift passes are detailed in our lift pass guide, and choosing a ski area for your level in our guide to skiing in Chamonix.

How do you get the Lac Blanc hike right?

Small high-altitude lake reflecting the clouds, the needles of the massif behind

Lac Blanc is the signature hike of the area, with a spectacular view of the peaks and glaciers, especially when the water is still. Its success is also its flaw: in summer the path is often packed from late morning to mid-afternoon.

It is neither a flat stroll nor a quick visit. The ground is rocky, sometimes exposed, and can hold snow or ice early in the season: hiking boots are essential, and allow half a day to a full day depending on the route and your pace.

The best compromise is to leave very early, on the first cabin, or to go up after the peak if the gondola times allow it. Variants, durations and the mountain hut are detailed in our guide to hiking in Chamonix.

Are Lac de la Flégère and the Grand Balcon Nord good alternatives?

Lac de la Flégère is the shorter, less ambitious option: two to four hours, quieter when Lac Blanc is overflowing, but with a less spectacular panorama. It suits people who want to walk without devoting the whole day to it.

The Grand Balcon Nord, which links the areas along this side of the valley, is a real mountain hike: people walk it in sections, combining the lifts. Think in terms of terrain, height gain and return times, not just kilometres.

La Flégère or Le Brévent: which should you choose?

CriterionLa FlégèreLe Brévent
Viewhead-on and wide open to Mont Blancbroader panorama, over Chamonix and the ranges
Feelskiing, hiking, departure point for the lakesmore straightforwardly panoramic and touristy
Signature hikeLac Blanc, Lac de la Flégère, Grand Balcon NordPlanpraz, Brévent summit, balcony trails
Accessfrom Les Praz, by bus or trainfrom central Chamonix, on foot
Crowdsheavy around Lac Blancheavy on the terraces and in the restaurants

Le Brévent is more of a "postcard" for a purely panoramic visit; La Flégère is often more interesting for combining skiing or walking. Both depend on the weather and on the lifts being open. See our page on Le Brévent.

Where can you eat at La Flégère?

The mountain hut and the area's restaurants extend the visit, but do not guarantee service all year: their hours follow the seasons, the gondola's opening and the weather. Allow €25 to €45 for a main course in a mountain brasserie.

Before counting on a meal up high, check that day's opening, the last order time, card payment, booking and the time of the last gondola down. The price pays for the location as much as the plate, and service slows down on busy days.

How do you get to La Flégère from Chamonix?

Road signs to Chamonix centre and Les Praz on the D1506, in front of the forest

The base station is in Les Praz, about 3 kilometres from the centre. On foot, allow 35 to 45 minutes depending on where you start; that is an estimate, not an official time.

The simplest option is the bus: line 1 links Les Houches, Chamonix and Les Praz-Flégère, with a regular service until 18 December 2026 according to the autumn guide, and a lift pass makes it free. The Mont-Blanc Express train also stops at Les Praz, free with the guest card. The details are in getting around Chamonix.

By car, access is easy but parking near the gondola is limited and fills up fast at weekends, during the holidays and on sunny mornings. A tourist source describes it as free, with no municipal rate sheet to confirm it: see parking in Chamonix.

When should you go up, and for how long?

GoalBest timeRealistic duration
Panorama without hikingbefore 9:30am2 to 3 hours
Skiingat openinghalf a day to a full day
Lac Blancvery early start5 to 8 hours depending on the route
Lac de la Flégèremorning or late afternoon2 to 4 hours
Photographyclear morning or late afternoon2 to 4 hours

The morning keeps queues down and makes the most of better visibility before the clouds build. In summer, leaving early also reduces the risk of coming down in a thunderstorm.

Possible disappointments

  • An overcrowded Lac Blanc. The photo shows a deserted lake; the reality in July is a line of hikers.
  • The view depends on the weather. A ticket is not refunded because the view disappoints.
  • "Open" does not mean "everything open". The Index, some runs, the restaurants and the trails each have their own calendar.
  • The total cost. Transport to Les Praz, parking, ticket, meal and gear: a €25 return turns into a much more expensive outing for a family.
  • Limited free travel. It applies to under-5s; no first-Sunday-of-the-month discount is published.

Do not confuse La Flégère with Les Grands Montets, another ski area based in Argentière, or the Les Praz gondola with the Aiguille du Midi cable car. Other outings are in the What to do section and things to do in Chamonix.

Staying in Les Praz puts La Flégère gondola within walking distance, with the train to reach central Chamonix in a few minutes. The village is quieter than the centre, with its own bars and restaurants.
