Climbing Mont Blanc from Chamonix: routes, guides, prices and booking the Goûter hut
The normal route is the least technical way up Mont Blanc, not a hike. The three classic routes, the preparation they require, compulsory booking for the Goûter hut and what 2026 showed about its closures, what the climb costs, guides, and the risks the brochures play down.

The summit of Mont Blanc stood at 4,807.47 m at the 2025 measurement, 1.88 metres more than in 2023 (4,805.59 m): the altitude follows the thickness of the snow cap. Reaching it is a high-mountain climb, not a sporty hike: a roped glacier, crampons and an ice axe, steep ground, rockfall and a summit day of 10 to 14 hours.
The Compagnie des guides de Chamonix says it itself: long the culmination of a mountaineering career, Mont Blanc has wrongly become a "consumer product". Here are the routes, the preparation, booking the Goûter hut, what the climb costs and the real risks.
The valley huts and the Goûter hut, on the normal route, are on the map. Tap a number for the listing or directions.
Which routes lead to the top of Mont Blanc?
| Route | Itinerary and duration | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| French normal route, via the Goûter | tramway to the Nid d'Aigle, Tête Rousse, Goûter hut (5 to 6 hr), then 10 to 12 hr return to the summit; 2 days of climbing | the least technical of the three, but crampons, ice axe, roping up and the Goûter couloir exposed to rockfall |
| Trois Monts | from the Aiguille du Midi via Mont Blanc du Tacul and Mont Maudit; 2 days or more | more technical: steep slopes, seracs, a route very dependent on conditions |
| Italian route, via the Gonella | long approach on the Italian side; 3 to 4 days | wilder, more isolated, retreat more complicated |
These durations are planning ranges, not guaranteed times: wind, fresh snow, the state of the glacier and municipal decisions change the programme on the day. All are in principle climbed from June to September, with no guarantee on weather or snow.
The normal route starts from the Nid d'Aigle, terminus of the Mont Blanc Tramway. The Trois Monts start from the top of the Aiguille du Midi, where visitors in trainers cross paths with fully equipped rope teams.

What training do you need?
Several months of preparation for a beginner. On the normal route, the Nid d'Aigle to the Goûter is about 1,428 m of ascent, then about 1,015 metres from the hut to the summit, above 3,800 metres. A hiking holiday in Chamonix is not enough to prepare for it.
- regular outings of 6 to 10 hours with height gain;
- the ability to string together two days of effort;
- training at altitude, ideally above 3,000 m;
- learning crampons, the ice axe, roping up and self-arrest.
Acclimatisation matters as much as fitness: a 4 to 6-day programme, with intermediate summits and a weather margin, succeeds more often than a direct ascent. Easy-access acclimatisation outings, such as Lac Blanc, prepare your legs, not your body for altitude.
How do you book the Goûter hut?
Booking online is compulsory, in the participants' real names, on the hut's official website, reached from the Saint-Gervais pages. For the normal route huts, Nid d'Aigle, Tête Rousse and Goûter, it is done online up to 10 days before your stay. Fine-weather dates and weekends fill up well in advance.
A booking does not validate the climb: the route can be closed or advised against. Be wary of places resold on unofficial platforms: names may be checked, the transfer refused, the price inflated, and a guide's offer may not include the hut.
| Goûter hut, 2026 | Published price |
|---|---|
| Night in season | €70 |
| Night for Alpine Club members | €65 |
| Breakfast | €21 |
A €10 price also appears on the page: it applies to the winter closure period, not the climbing season. 2027 prices have not been published.
Is the Goûter hut open all summer?
Not necessarily. For 2026, opening was announced from 30 May to 4 October 2026. Yet the normal route, Tête Rousse and the Goûter were closed from 26 to 29 May for works and the risk of rockfall, and reopening was only announced for 26 August, after access conditions had been reassessed.
Dismantling of the old Goûter hut was scheduled from 1 June to 15 August 2026, with the normal route supposed to remain passable but interrupted for snow clearing, ice removal and rockfall. The lesson applies to 2027: a published opening date is not a guarantee of operation, and an order can close the route without commercial notice.
Can you bivouac to avoid the hut?
No: camping and bivouacking are forbidden in the Mont Blanc protected site, including around the normal route. Pitching a tent because you have no booking is not a legal solution. Offenders face a fine.
How much does climbing Mont Blanc cost?
No complete, verifiable price list from the Compagnie des guides is published for 2026-2027: there is no single "guide price". The rate depends on the route, the number of participants, the days, acclimatisation, lifts, huts, meals and cancellation terms.
Beyond the guiding, budget for nights in huts, the tramway to the Nid d'Aigle (a single cost €32.20 on the summer 2026 price list), transport, rental of crampons, harness, helmet and ice axe, rescue insurance and acclimatisation days. Very low offers sometimes cover a single day of guiding.
The Compagnie des guides does publish its prices for the Vallée Blanche, at €175 per person in a group: a good point of comparison for a first glacier day, described in our Vallée Blanche guide.
Prepare the climb with professionals: mountaineering courses, glacier introductions, guided acclimatisation climbs from Chamonix: our partner's page gathers the offers, with reviews and rescheduling terms in case of bad weather.

The Goûter couloir is exposed to rockfall, especially when it thaws. The risk varies with temperature, the overnight refreeze, recent snow or rain, the time of day, the evolution of the permafrost and stones dislodged by other rope teams. Crossing early in the morning limits the danger without removing it.
No consolidated statistical series gives the number of attempts, accidents and deaths by route and season, nor the share of guided parties. Figures quoted in the media are not comparable with each other: an accident rate per attempt would be misleading. The absence of a reliable figure does not mean the absence of risk.
Crowding is part of the danger: queues in the couloir, rope teams crossing, stones dislodged. In an accident, call 112, or the Chamonix PGHM on 04 50 53 16 89. The Office de Haute Montagne gives information on conditions on 04 50 53 22 08.
How many days should you plan in Chamonix?
- 2 days minimum for a direct ascent, once acclimatised;
- 4 to 6 days for a programme with acclimatisation and a weather margin;
- more if you need to learn glacier techniques.
Summit day starts in the night to make the most of the refreeze and keep a margin before the afternoon deterioration. Keep spare days: the weather can cancel a climb after several days of preparation and money already committed. The seasons are compared in when to go to Chamonix.
What can you see of Mont Blanc without climbing it?
The Aiguille du Midi puts the summit within sight, at 3,842 m, and lets you watch the rope teams on the Trois Monts. The tramway to the Nid d'Aigle takes you to the start of the normal route, and the Mer de Glace shows the retreat of the massif's glaciers.
The Musée Alpin tells the story of Chamonix mountaineering, and the Tour du Mont Blanc circles the massif on foot, with no mountaineering technique needed. Other outings are in the What to do section.
Can you organise it without speaking French?
The essentials, yes: cable cars, mountain shops, agencies and online bookings work in English. Municipal orders, safety instructions, exchanges with hut keepers and the technical briefing are trickier. For a guided climb, ask about the guide's language before paying: understanding an instruction to turn back is non-negotiable.
The small print the brochures skip
- A hut booking does not guarantee the route is open.
- Lift and tramway timetables can derail a tight programme.
- Huts are shared, noisy and basic.
- Displayed prices often exclude transport, gear, insurance and acclimatisation.
- The normal route is the least technical, not an easy hike.
Sleep on the Saint-Gervais side or in Les Houches before setting off: the Mont Blanc Tramway leaves from Le Fayet, and Les Houches is on the Mont-Blanc Express line. A quiet night before heading up to the Nid d'Aigle, without crossing the whole valley at dawn.

Clémence grew up in Les Houches and worked four winters at the ticket office of a lift in the valley. She knows which passes sell for too much on a Saturday, and which runs close first when the snow gives way in April. She only gives a lift time if it is on that day's board.
