Paragliding in Chamonix: tandem flights, prices, take-off sites and safety

A tandem paragliding flight in Chamonix usually takes off from Planpraz, 2,000 metres above the town, facing Mont Blanc. The passenger has nothing to steer: a professional straps them in, explains the few instructions for take-off, then flies for them. No experience is needed, and some schools accept children from age 5.

The price, on the other hand, varies a lot from one school to another, and the lift almost always comes on top. Here are the three take-off sites, what a flight costs in 2026 and what the price includes, the season, what cancels a flight, and how to check your pilot.

Where do you take off from in Chamonix?

Paragliders taking off from a high meadow on the south balcony, facing the Mont Blanc massif and the Bossons glacier
SiteAltitudeWho it suits
Planpraz (Brévent)about 2,000 ma first flight: gentle slope, high availability, direct view of the massif
Plan de l'Aiguilleabout 2,300 ma higher alternative, more dependent on the cable car and the weather
Aiguille du Midiabout 3,800 ma high-mountain flight, rare, expensive and with no guarantee

Planpraz is the reference site: you go up on the Brévent gondola from the centre, and take-off is on a slope described as gentle. A standard flight there lasts about 20 minutes for around a thousand metres of descent. The site is covered in our page on Le Brévent.

From the Aiguille du Midi, one provider advertises about 30 minutes for 2,500 metres of descent. It is the most spectacular flight on paper, and the most likely to be cancelled.

How much does a paragliding flight in Chamonix cost?

Option, prices published in 2026Flight priceTo add
Planpraz, standard flight (local page)€100the lift, listed at €13.50
Planpraz, adult discovery flight (school)€150single to Planpraz at €18.50, video from €30
Planpraz, child aged 5 to 14 (school)€120lift not included
Planpraz, thrill flight€170 to €180lift usually separate
Planpraz, long flight€260 to €280lift and video to check
Plan de l'Aiguille€110 to €170lift depending on the option
Aiguille du Midi€250 to €380up to €50 of lifts with one operator

So the price you pay is the flight, plus the lift, plus the video option. For Planpraz, the published prices range from €100 to €180 depending on the school and the option: compare what is included (duration, lift, video, pilot), not just the displayed price.

The lift itself does not cost the same everywhere: €13.50 on a local page, €18.50 for the single ticket shown for paragliders by the Brévent cable car. No family discount, free child flight or reduction with a ski pass is generally published for the flight.

Book a tandem flight with reviews and cancellation terms shown: our partner's Chamonix page gathers paragliding flights and the valley's other airborne activities, with rescheduling terms in case of bad weather.

How long does a flight last?

A standard flight from Planpraz lasts about 20 minutes, and the whole activity takes about an hour, with the ride up, preparation and landing. Longer options advertise 30 to 45 minutes, a duration that depends on the day's thermals: it is not a guarantee.

If you are prone to motion sickness, choose a standard flight on a summer morning, smoother than a thrill flight or a long flight that seeks out active thermals.

When should you fly, and at what time?

In summer, flights mostly take place in the morning, when the air is calmer; the afternoon is still possible if conditions allow. In winter, they mostly happen in the late morning and the afternoon, once the sun has warmed the slopes.

The Planpraz season follows the gondola's opening: one school advertises activity from mid-June to mid-September and from mid-December to late April, others show "all year". That often means a flight can be organised from another site, not that Planpraz is available every day. Lift dates are in lift opening dates.

What can cancel a flight?

Six things can ground a flight:

  • wind that is too strong or from the wrong direction;
  • turbulence or excessive thermal activity;
  • rain, snow, fog or cloud on the take-off;
  • a closed lift;
  • an unusable take-off or landing area;
  • the pilot's decision, for safety reasons.

The flight is decided on the day, by the wind and the visibility: nobody can guarantee it the evening before. The pilot may swap Planpraz for the Plan de l'Aiguille, or cancel, without this being a failing. Confirm the evening before or that morning, and ask who refunds the lift if the flight is cancelled once you are up there.

How do you check the pilot and the school?

Insist on a qualified paragliding instructor or an authorised professional: that is the advice of the local tourist page. One school claims its federation's quality label and wings fitted with a reserve parachute and airbags, a useful point that does not replace checking the pilot.

Before paying, ask for the pilot's name, their qualification, their professional liability insurance, passenger cover, cancellation and rescheduling terms, and the procedure if you land somewhere else. No central register of Chamonix schools is published.

Do you need to book, and where?

Yes, especially during the holidays, in July and August, for long flights, for the Aiguille du Midi and for a group. Book with your chosen school or on the tourist office platform, booking.chamonix.com, which showed a tandem thrill flight from €180 for an hour's activity.

Book a few days to a few weeks ahead in high season, but keep a weather margin: a non-refundable flight bought too early is a poor bet in the mountains. Avoid listings with no pilot name, no insurance and no lift costs stated.

Planpraz or the Aiguille du Midi: which should you choose?

For a first flight, Planpraz offers the best balance of experience and price: a head-on view of Mont Blanc, an accessible take-off and enough time in the air to feel the flight. Allow about €150 to €170 plus the lift with a school.

The Aiguille du Midi is an exceptional high-mountain experience, but expensive and not guaranteed: up to €380, with the cable car ticket, the wait and dependence on the sky on top. One provider even lists it as unavailable in July and August. See our page on the Aiguille du Midi and its tickets.

Where can you watch paragliders without flying?

From town, the wings can be seen above Le Brévent on fine days, and the area around the Planpraz gondola lets you watch the take-offs. Stay out of the take-off and landing areas, which depend on the wind: no full map of landing zones is published, so follow the signs.

No paragliding festival is confirmed in Chamonix for the coming season. Other high-altitude outings are listed in things to do in Chamonix and the What to do section.

Can you fly without speaking French?

Yes, booking works in French and English. The take-off instructions (run, stop, sit in the harness) must be understood before you go. If you speak neither French nor English, say so when booking: the school will tell you whether the briefing can be given in your language.

A flight combines well with a day at Le Brévent or a hike, see our Chamonix hikes, and with the non-ski activities in our page on Chamonix without skiing.

Staying in the centre puts you within walking distance of the Planpraz gondola for the first flight of the morning, the calmest in summer. The right base for combining paragliding, Le Brévent and the Aiguille du Midi without a car.
