Lac Blanc in Chamonix: access from La Flégère, hiking time, mountain hut and tips
Lac Blanc is the finest viewpoint in the valley and Chamonix's busiest hike. The three ways up and their figures, the season depending on snow, the Chéserys lakes, the hut and how to book it, what the outing costs, and how to avoid crowds and storms.

Lac Blanc, at about 2,352 m in the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve, is the most famous viewpoint in the Chamonix valley. On a clear day it faces the Grandes Jorasses, the Aiguille Verte, the Drus and the Mont Blanc massif, which are reflected in the water when it is still.
La Flégère gondola removes most of the climb, which makes it accessible, but not easy: the trail is made of rocks, scree and sometimes equipped sections. Here are the three routes up and their figures, the season, the hut, and how to go without the crowds.
Lac Blanc and the viewpoints served by the lifts are on the map. Tap a number for the departure listing.
Why is Lac Blanc worth the trip?
For the whole experience more than for the lake itself: a balcony trail above the valley, the small Chéserys lakes along the way, the Aiguilles Rouges reserve, and one of the widest panoramas of the massif. People do not come here to swim or for the size of the lake.
In fog, the appeal drops almost to zero while the terrain stays rocky. The tourist office presents it both as a family outing and as a "difficult" route: both pages exist side by side, and the second is closer to reality for a walker not used to Alpine terrain.
Which routes lead up to Lac Blanc?
| Route | Distance and ascent (2026) | Duration | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| From La Flégère top station | 7 km and 500 m of ascent return | 1 hr 45 min up according to the tourist office, 3 hr return | hikers at ease on rocky ground |
| From the Index | 2.9 km return, about 30 m of ascent | 2 hr 45 min return | less climbing, the same boulder terrain |
| On foot from Les Praz | 1,400 to 1,560 m of ascent | 4 to 5 hr up | sporty, not advised in strong heat |
The tourist office recommends the gondola, which saves about 800 metres of uninteresting climbing through the forest. The hut gives about 1 hr 30 min from La Flégère, the tourist office 1 hr 45 min to 2 hr: the difference comes from pace, stops and the state of the trail. For a realistic plan, allow 2 hr up and 4 to 5 hr in total with breaks.
The Index chairlift, at about 2,396 m, reduces the climb further, but not the difficulty: altitude, boulders and late snow slow a group down. The 30 m ascent on the route page refers to the route from the Index, not the link from the valley.

How much does the Lac Blanc outing cost?
The trail is free to use; only the lifts cost money. The Les Praz-Flégère pedestrian return cost €25 for an adult in 2026, €43 with the Index chairlift. The hiker ticket, a return on one section and a single on the other, cost €33.
A €14 return price circulates on a third-party site, with no usable year: do not rely on it. Add the trip to Les Praz, any parking, a meal or a night at the hut and your gear. Gondola prices and times are detailed in our page on La Flégère.

Only in summer and autumn, depending on the snow: the tourist office states that high-altitude routes are only passable in those seasons. No fixed opening date can be announced, because everything depends on the snow melting on the trail.
Early summer remains tricky: patches of snow in the hollows, hard snow in the morning and slippery snow on the way down, hidden waymarks, unstable scree under the snow patches. An easy path on dry ground becomes dangerous on snow. For choosing the period, see when to go to Chamonix.
La Flégère gondola follows its own calendar: in 2026 it closed on 14 September for the off-season, before reopening on 28 November 2026 for winter. The summer 2027 dates have not been published yet.
What are the Chéserys lakes worth?
More than a quick detour. The Chéserys lakes, in the same area, are smaller and often calmer than Lac Blanc, which sometimes gives better reflections. The view of the massif is still spectacular, and the rocks along the shore give more varied foregrounds for photos.
They do not guarantee solitude: in the middle of a summer day, walkers spread out across every pool. Take a topographic map of your chosen route: the paths cross between the lakes.
Can you sleep at the Lac Blanc hut?
Yes, in summer. Bookings are made on the hut's website from 1 April to 31 May, then only by phone from 1 June, on 07 67 56 74 14. The pages do not all agree on these arrangements: confirm with the hut.
A secondary source mentions about thirty places and quotes half board at about €70, a price the hut did not confirm for 2026. Places go fast in July and August: book as soon as sales open. It is a mountain hut, not a high-altitude hotel, and a night there does not guarantee peace during the day.
A night in the hut is also the way to avoid the crowds: you see the lake in the evening and at sunrise, before the lifts start running. The valley's other huts are covered in our Tour du Mont Blanc guide.

What time should you set off, and how long should you allow?
| Time | Advantages | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | clear light, fewer people, margin before storms | cool, hard snow early in the season |
| Middle of the day | none | maximum crowds, harsh light, heat on the rock |
| Late afternoon | warm light | late descent, last cabin not to be missed |
Aim for the first part of the morning: in the mountains, summer storms often build in the afternoon, and you need to have left exposed slopes before then. Allow at least 3 hr for the loop from La Flégère without a long break, 4 to 5 hr with the Chéserys and photos, and a full day with waits at the lifts.
How do you avoid crowds and nasty surprises?
Crowds gather at La Flégère station, in the narrow sections, on the shore of the main lake and on the way back, when groups come down together. Taking the first cabin, or sleeping at the hut, is still the best defence. The crowds do not cancel out the site's appeal, but they change the experience.
- Footwear: grippy soles are essential; sandals and city trainers are unsuitable in the scree.
- Poles help on the way down, without replacing balance on the boulders.
- The last ride down: arriving after the last cabin means walking all the way down to Les Praz.
- The weather: a storm on the balcony is dangerous, and fog wipes out the view.
- Parking in Les Praz fills up on sunny days: the train and the bus go there.
Before setting off, check the state of the trails, whether La Flégère and the Index are open, the time of the last ride down and the reserve's rules. In an accident, call 112, or the PGHM on 04 50 53 16 89. Hiking safety rules are in our Chamonix hikes.
How do you get to Les Praz without a car?
The Mont-Blanc Express train stops at Les Praz, free with the guest card, and bus line 1 links Chamonix with Les Praz-Flégère. The gondola station is about 3 kilometres from the centre, or 35 to 45 minutes on foot. The details are in getting around Chamonix.
For a hiking holiday, the other easy-access viewpoints are Le Brévent, see our page on Le Brévent, and Lac Bleu at the Plan de l'Aiguille. For lunch at altitude in the area, see our mountain restaurants, and all outings in the What to do section.
Can you go without speaking French?
Yes: signs, ticket offices and tourist information are in French and English, and the trail can be followed with a map and an offline GPS. French becomes useful for booking the hut by phone, understanding a last-minute closure or instructions about snow.
Staying in Les Praz means walking to the first Flégère cabin and reaching Lac Blanc before the crowds. The village is quiet, with the train to reach central Chamonix in the evening.
