Why go?
The Mont Blanc Tramway climbs 1,832 metres over 12.4 km, from Le Fayet at 580 m to the Nid d'Aigle at 2,412 m. It is the highest railway in France according to its operator, and the start of the normal route up Mont Blanc.
Note that it does not leave from Chamonix, but from Saint-Gervais, about 25 km away.
Good to know
An adult return to the Nid d'Aigle costs €40, for a journey of about 1 hr 5 min. In winter, the tramway does not go all the way up, and its season ends on 29 March 2027.
Our advice
From Chamonix, the valley train runs to Le Fayet station, where the tramway leaves. In summer, book your time slot up and check the time of the last train down before setting off on a hike.
