Aiguille du Midi webcams and weather in Chamonix: reading the conditions before going up

A sunny webcam does not tell you whether the cable car is running, and the Chamonix forecast says nothing about the wind at 3,842 metres. The official webcams to open, what each one shows, how to read gusts, temperature and visibility, and the decision sequence before going up the Aiguille du Midi.

Aiguille du Midi webcams and weather in Chamonix: reading the conditions before going up

Before paying for a ticket to the Aiguille du Midi, two questions matter: is the cable car running, and will you see anything at the top? Webcams answer the second, badly answer the first. The Chamonix forecast answers neither, because the valley is at just over 1,000 metres and the summit at 3,842 m.

This page does not copy a frozen temperature: it tells you where to read the day's values, what each source measures, and how to combine them that same morning.

Which webcams should you check before going up?

Three official pages are enough, in this order:

  • The Vallée Blanche ridge webcam, on the tourist office website: it shows the summit, the ridge and the Grandes Jorasses. Open the ridge webcam.
  • The operator's "live info" page, Mont-Blanc Natural Resort: webcam, weather, wind, temperatures and operating status in one place. Open the Aiguille du Midi live info.
  • The Chamonix webcam portal, to compare the summit with the valley and the other sectors. Open the webcam portal.

The operator also publishes 360° panoramas, the "panocams", on its dedicated page. A full interactive view is not guaranteed for every installation, nor every day.

What does each webcam show, and what does it not show?

WebcamAltitudeWhat you can conclude from it
Aiguille du Midi summit3,842 mcloud at the summit, visibility, snow on the ridge
Montenvers, Mer de Glace1,913 mthe state of the Montenvers site, nothing about the summit
Grands Montetsup to 2,765 mconditions in the Argentière ski area, not a substitute
Chamonix valleyjust over 1,000 mthe valley weather, often misleading for the summit

The difference in altitude decides everything. A clear Mer de Glace does not mean a clear summit, and a blue sky over Chamonix can hide a sea of clouds stuck at 3,000 metres. The reverse also happens: a grey valley, and a summit in the sun above the clouds.

An image can also be old. Webcams refresh at varying intervals, a white image can come from fog, frost on the lens or a fault, and a camera can stay online during a technical closure or out of season.

How do you read the weather at 3,842 metres?

Wind is often the deciding factor, more than temperature. The tourist office reading on 26 October 2026 at 4:10pm gave −6°C, gusts of 60 km/h. At that speed, −6°C feels much colder, and gusts of that order can be enough to suspend the cable car.

The same day, the operator's page forecast −8°C in the morning, −6°C in the afternoon and a wind of 43 km/h from the west. The two figures do not necessarily contradict each other: one is a gust, the other an average wind, at different times. Remember the rule: look at the gusts, not just the average.

  • Visibility: a grey webcam can mean fog, low cloud or a fault.
  • The 0°C freezing level: the lower it is, the more snow and ice affect access; it does not replace the local forecast.
  • The hour-by-hour trend: read the forecast for your ride-up slot, as clouds and wind often build in the afternoon.
  • The measuring altitude: official pages show 3,842 m or 3,845 m depending on the measuring point.

For the valley forecast, Météo-France's page for Chamonix and Chamonix Météo, which gives a reading by altitude, complement the operator's pages.

What is the temperature at the summit by month?

Be wary of the temperature tables that circulate. One, repeated by a British travel guide, gives up to 27°C in July: these are valley values. The series that is plausible for the high mountains puts July between 0 and 4°C at the summit.

PeriodRange in the "high mountain" series
February and March−14 to −10°C (7 to 14°F)
May−8 to −3°C (18 to 27°F)
July0 to 4°C (32 to 39°F)
August1 to 5°C (34 to 41°F)
October−5 to −2°C (23 to 28°F)

Take this series as an order of magnitude, never as a forecast. The only useful figure is the day's value, read on the pages above. Dress for winter at the top, even in August.

A gap of twenty to thirty degrees between the valley and the summit is nothing unusual: a hat, gloves, a windproof jacket and sunglasses fit in a small bag and save the visit. Wind, more than temperature, is what makes the terraces hard going.

How do you decide whether to go up that morning?

  1. Open the operator's live info page and the tourist office's: cable car status, hours for the day, restrictions.
  2. Look at the summit webcam, then a valley webcam to measure the difference.
  3. Read the temperature, gusts and visibility at summit altitude, for your slot.
  4. Get the opening confirmed at the ticket desk before buying a non-changeable ticket.
  5. Bring warm clothes, a windproof jacket, sunglasses and good shoes, even if Chamonix is in the sun.

If you have booked a slot, read the cancellation and rescheduling terms before paying, and prefer a flexible fare when the weather is uncertain. Booking rules are detailed in our Aiguille du Midi ticket guide.

To ride up on the first cabin, you need to sleep within walking distance of the cable car. Accommodation in central Chamonix lets you check the webcam when you wake up and walk to the departure, with no car or shuttle.

Does a working webcam mean the cable car is running?

No. On 26 October 2026, the official page showed the Aiguille du Midi as closed while displaying the summit weather and a time window of 11am to 4:15pm. A weather display can therefore remain during a closure, and a webcam can keep running during maintenance.

Distinguish five situations: the scheduled annual closure, the planned closure for the day, a temporary stop for wind or maintenance, limited access to some terraces, and an interruption after tickets have been sold. No historical closure rate is published: nobody can tell you how many days a year the summit is inaccessible.

When is the Aiguille du Midi open in 2026-2027?

The cable car is closed from 2 November to 18 December 2026 for its annual overhaul. It reopens on 19 December 2026, with hours from 8:10am to 4:30pm until 28 March 2027, then from 8:10am to 5pm until 30 May.

These hours remain subject to the weather. The calendar for all the valley's lifts is in Chamonix lift opening dates.

Which traps should you avoid?

The Chamonix valley seen from above, a glacier in the foreground and mountain ranges in the distance
  • Deciding on the valley weather. Sun in Chamonix says nothing about the summit.
  • Taking the Mer de Glace webcam for the Aiguille's. Nearly 2,000 metres separate them.
  • Trusting an image without checking its time. A morning image is no longer valid at noon.
  • Forgetting the wind. A temperature just below freezing with strong gusts makes the visit unpleasant, or impossible.
  • Buying from an unidentified reseller. Fake websites, slot tickets already used, promises of "guaranteed entry": go through the official ticket office.

For someone with reduced mobility, have the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc confirm the wheelchair route, lifts and accessible terraces before paying, giving details of your wheelchair and the planned day.

What else should you read for the Vallée Blanche or a climb?

For a skier or a mountaineer, the ridge webcam is mainly useful for seeing how busy it is and the state of the track at the start. It says nothing about crevasses, snow cover on the glacier or the exit towards Montenvers. That information comes from mountain professionals, not a camera.

The Chamonix Office de Haute Montagne gives information on route conditions, on 04 50 53 22 08. In an accident, 112 remains the instruction, and the Chamonix PGHM publishes 04 50 53 16 89. The level required, the guide and the gear are detailed in our Vallée Blanche guide.

A simple rule applies to everyone: if the wind is strong at the summit or visibility drops on the ridge, it is not a good day to go down. The cable car can take visitors up in weather where a glacier descent becomes dangerous.

What should you do if the summit is in cloud?

Keep the Aiguille for another day and choose a less exposed outing. The Montenvers train is still worthwhile under a medium cloud ceiling, and Le Brévent or La Flégère, lower down, often have a view when the summit is in cloud. Ideas for overcast days are gathered in what to do in Chamonix without skiing or when it rains.

If you are coming for several days, do not book the Aiguille for the first morning: keep it flexible and go up on the first clear day. The most favourable seasons are compared in when to go to Chamonix, and the other useful pages are in the Practical section.

Aiming for the Aiguille's reopening in mid-December? The cable car restarts on 19 December, at the same time as the valley's main ski areas. Accommodation for that week goes early: compare before locking in your dates.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you see the Aiguille du Midi webcam?
On the Chamonix Tourist Office webcams page (view of the Vallée Blanche ridge) and on Mont-Blanc Natural Resort's live info page, which brings together the webcam, weather, wind and cable car status.
What is the temperature at the top of the Aiguille du Midi?
Read it on the day on the live info page. On 26 October 2026, the tourist office recorded −6°C, gusts of 60 km/h. Even in summer, bring winter clothing.
Does a clear webcam guarantee it is open?
No. Wind, maintenance or a scheduled closure can stop the cable car while the webcam shows a blue sky. Check the operating status and get it confirmed at the ticket desk.
Is the Mer de Glace webcam enough to decide?
No, Montenvers is at 1,913 m, nearly 2,000 metres below the summit. Its conditions say nothing about visibility at 3,842 metres.
When does the Aiguille du Midi reopen for winter?
On 19 December 2026, after the annual closure from 2 November to 18 December 2026.
