Luxury hotels in Chamonix: five-star hotels, prestige chalets and fine dining

Luxury in Chamonix comes down to a few addresses: three five-star hotels identified by the tourist office, a fourth reopening and aiming for the same category, and a range of prestige chalets rented by the week. The valley sells the high mountains before glamour, and its luxury offer remains concentrated.

Here is each address with its area, its starting prices and what they cover, the restaurants that go with them, the services that make the difference for skiing, and what the word "palace" means here.

What are the five-star hotels in Chamonix?

HotelAreaStarting price shown (October 2026)Main strength
Le Hameau Albert 1er38 route du Bouchet, close to the centrefrom €197Relais & Châteaux, fine dining, full spa, independent chalets
Grand Hôtel des Alpescentrefrom €267a historic address in the heart of the pedestrian streets
Hôtel Mont-Blanchistoric centrefrom €300in-house spa and restaurant, everything on foot
Le Morganecentre, Aiguille du Midi area€234 noted for 10 January 2027reopening announced for December 2026

The tourist office's starting prices have no date, room type or cancellation terms. One platform showed €248 including taxes and fees for a night in October 2026 in a five-star hotel, and €338 in another result: that is the low season. No verifiable upper range is published for Christmas or February.

Can you talk about a palace in Chamonix?

Not in the official sense. In France, "Palace" is a distinction awarded to a handful of five-star hotels, and no hotel in Chamonix holds it. The Hameau Albert 1er is a five-star member of Relais & Châteaux, which is a different label.

When a platform or an agency talks about "Chamonix palaces", it is using a commercial word. We write "five-star hotels and luxury addresses", which describes reality without embellishing it.

Is the Hameau Albert 1er the most complete house?

Illustration: wooden chalets of the Hameau Albert 1er in their snowy garden in Chamonix, lit windows and the needles of the massif above

It is certainly the broadest in services. Set on an estate of about a hectare on route du Bouchet, it brings together a hotel, independent wooden chalets, a spa with a heated indoor-outdoor pool, hot tub and steam room, and a fine dining restaurant.

The two tasting menus noted on 7 October 2026 cost €178 and €205. The number of Michelin stars for the restaurant should be checked in the year's guide, which our research did not consult: we do not state it.

Its trade-off is location: route du Bouchet, about 500 metres from place Balmat, or seven minutes on foot. That is a little longer than from a hotel on the pedestrian streets, and route du Bouchet can be busy.

Hôtel Mont-Blanc or Grand Hôtel des Alpes: which for a stay in the centre?

Both are right in the centre, a few minutes from the pedestrian streets, restaurants and stations. The Hôtel Mont-Blanc has a spa and a restaurant, so you can spend an evening without going out. The Grand Hôtel des Alpes plays the historic house card in the heart of town.

The downside of the centre is noise: bars, deliveries and foot traffic on weekend and holiday evenings. Ask for a room on the courtyard side or on a high floor, and check the orientation before paying the "Mont Blanc view" supplement. Spa hotels are compared in detail in our page on hotels with a spa in Chamonix.

Le Morgane: should you book a hotel that is reopening?

With caution. Le Morgane announces its reopening for December 2026 and says it is aiming for a fifth star: that is not a rating already obtained. A non-refundable room only was offered at €234 for 10 January 2027.

A reopening hotel may need some fine-tuning of its service in the first weeks. If you book for winter 2026-2027, choose a cancellable rate and check that the services that matter to you (spa, restaurant, shuttle) will be open on your dates. Its area has one advantage: the Aiguille du Midi cable car is within walking distance.

Which services make the difference for a ski holiday?

Illustration: ski room in a luxury hotel, boots lined up on heated boot dryers and skis stored in wooden lockers
  • A heated ski room and boot drying.
  • A shuttle to the lifts, with its timetable and capacity: in Chamonix, the ski areas are far apart.
  • A concierge to book lift passes, gear, instructors, guides, transfers and restaurants.
  • The spa, checking what is included and the opening hours.
  • A real view of the massif, not to be confused with a simple "mountain view".

The shuttle matters more than elsewhere, because Chamonix has no linked ski area: getting from Le Brévent to Les Grands Montets requires transport. How the ski areas work is explained in our guide to skiing in Chamonix, and guides and instructors in ski lessons in Chamonix.

The concierge is mostly useful for hard-to-get bookings: a guide for the Vallée Blanche at peak dates, a private transfer from Geneva (€180 to €350 per vehicle in 2026, see our Geneva to Chamonix page), or a lift pass booked with the room, which gives a 20% discount for 2 to 9 days according to our lift pass guide.

What about prestige chalets?

They form the other half of Chamonix luxury, for families and groups. A twelve-person chalet, the Edelweiss chalet, was offered at €4,600 to €8,400 a week outside the festive season, and €9,400 for New Year week. The Hameau Albert 1er also rents independent chalets on its estate.

No verifiable price list is published by prestige chalet agencies. Before signing, get a quote for the exact week, the en-suite bedrooms, the chef, daily cleaning, the driver, transfers, final cleaning, the tourist tax and the deposit. The details are in renting a chalet or apartment in Chamonix.

A chalet for family or friends: above six people, a catered chalet often works out cheaper per person than several luxury hotel rooms, with a fireplace and space thrown in.

Where can you dine when staying in a five-star hotel?

The Hameau Albert 1er's restaurant is the most cited fine dining address in the valley. The restaurants at the Hôtel Mont-Blanc and the other houses let you dine without going out, which counts in winter on a snowy evening.

During the Christmas, New Year and February holidays, book fine dining tables at the same time as the room: no minimum lead time is published, but evenings fill up fast. The valley's other restaurants, by budget, are in our guide to eating in Chamonix, and mountain restaurants in our mountain restaurants. To make a night of it, the addresses in the centre are in our page on après-ski and bars.

What goes on the final bill?

  • The tourist tax: for a five-star hotel, Le Prieuré showed €3.60 per person per night, an amount to confirm for each hotel.
  • Breakfast, often extra.
  • Parking, expensive in the centre.
  • Spa treatments, rarely included.
  • Concierge extras: transfers, driver, private chef, grocery delivery.
  • The card pre-authorisation on arrival, whose amount is never published.

Compare like with like: a cheaper non-refundable rate can cost more if your plans change. The all-in cost of a night is broken down in our guide to Chamonix hotels, and the full budget for a stay in how much a trip to Chamonix costs.

When should you book a luxury hotel for winter 2026-2027?

The week of 27 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 is the tightest: the tourist office was already selling a seven-night full-board stay with lift passes at €805 per person, in a range well below luxury. The large rooms and suites of the five-star hotels go first.

Distinguish three situations: a fully booked hotel, a cancellable rate that is no longer offered, and a hotel where only non-refundable rates remain. For February 2027, book before December; weekends in January and March are booked six to ten weeks ahead.

Open the winter in a five-star hotel, in mid-December: the week before the festive season is the most affordable of the high season, with the Aiguille du Midi and the big ski areas reopening. Suites are still available.

Possible disappointments

  • The word "palace", used without any official distinction.
  • "Close to the centre" without a distance in metres, which sometimes hides a road to walk along.
  • The starting price, valid for an off-peak date.
  • Noise in the centre on weekend evenings.
  • A reopening hotel, whose services may not all be ready.

The end of the season in luxury: in April, upmarket hotels lower their prices while Les Grands Montets and Balme are still skiing. The week of 10 to 17 April 2027 falls after most of the holidays.
